As a Business Services Manager, you contribute to the direction of business services nationally through working to define administrative practices that support effective operations and implement these across the organisation. This work is supported by Business Services Team Leaders and Business Services Officers. This in turn enables the local delivery of services to children and families and responsiveness to the courts. You therefore provide a critical link between business service strategy and practice.
You will ensure a professional frontline customer service to children and families, visitors and staff, and keep all aspects of the office running effectively and efficiently.
To perform these duties, you will need excellent administration and IT skills, financial knowledge and an ability to analyse trends in demand and productivity. Also, and most importantly, you will need experience of managing and supervising staff and the ability to deliver results through our Business Services teams.
What you need
You should possess a business related HND/NVQ 4 or a willingness to work towards one.

As a Business Services Officer, you will support the progress of children's cases from receipt to closure. You will carry out administrative duties for local operational teams, following nationally defined procedures.
In this role, you will ensure that the information that we hold regarding the children and families that are referred to us is accurate and processed correctly. You will update records on our electronic case recording system, saving relevant documents, sending letters and information packs to children and families, and following up missing information. You must therefore have good experience and knowledge of general office practice and procedures, coupled with strong IT skills.
You will carry out telephone, reception and other general administrative duties as required. As you may be a first point of contact for families, courts and solicitors, you will need strong oral and written communication skills.
What you need
You should either hold a minimum of NVQ2 in a relevant area or have a willingness to work towards this in the future.

Business Services Team Leaders manage and develop small teams of Business Services Officers. While undertaking many of the day-to-day duties of a Business Services Officer to a high standard, such as case recording and administration, you will oversee and ensure the quality of work locally adheres to national standards. You will provide the key local link between area management and administrative support to operations. You will manage workload across your administrative team, setting priorities in liaison with your Business Services Manager.
To apply for a Business Services Team Leader role, you must therefore have good knowledge and experience of general office practice, including IT skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. You will use these to undertake not just your own duties, but also to provide guidance and advice to support the work within your team.
What you need
You will either hold a minimum of NVQ2 in a relevant area or have a willingness to work towards this in the future.
Let us tell you more…
“I started working for Cafcass in 2010 as an agency admin assistant and over two years I progressed to a senior admin role, which I have been fulfilling for the last four years. More recently I was appointed to the new role of Business Services Team Leader for Cheshire, Merseyside and Lancashire. I also work closely with my fellow team leader in the North East and we prove cover for the whole business service area in each other’s absence.
“As Business Services Team Leader I provide line management for Business Services teams in my areas and ensure policies and processes are complied with. I am responsible for areas such as data security and health and safety in the offices I manage. Other tasks include providing support and performance information to Service Managers and ensuring Business Services meet the practice needs.
“Working for Cafcass enables constant development. Each day we face new challenges as an administrator, whether it be a change in process, increase in workload or a new task not completed before. Long term there are development opportunities to progress within your career in Cafcass and ongoing training. There is a constant learning curve, no matter how long you have worked for Cafcass.
“The Business Services role is so much more than any other administration job. The amount of knowledge a Cafcass administrator requires and gains is high, and we must never lose focus of the fact that every piece of paper or data we see relates to a child or family.
“While my role can be very demanding I always receive support from management and staff across the organisation. My Business Service Manager liaises with me daily and is always willing to offer professional or personal support. Plus, of course, the support I receive from my Business Services Team is a constant!
“You will find that everyone in Cafcass is willing to offer support to each other. Also nationally, Cafcass as a whole strives to ensure its employees are supported using initiatives such as the Employee Assistance Programme, and in more recent years, the implementation of the Health and Wellbeing service.”
- Kerrie Boden, Business Services Team Leader
